Fetching Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI entries) using cmd

Command Prompt is a command line interpreter interface which lets users’ perform a number of tasks with ease. The Command Prompt, officially called the Windows Command Processor and often abbreviated to CMD is a program that takes the user inputs in a text-based user interface screen with the Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Opening command prompt

You can easily open the Command Prompt by clicking Start and then typing “cmd” into the search box or by pressing Windows + R to open “Run” box. Type “cmd” and then click “OK” to open a regular Command Prompt. Type “cmd” and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open an administrator Command Prompt.

Note – We will be using a lot of command starting with wmic. WMIC or Windows Management Instrumentation utility is basically used to query WMI entries in Microsoft Windows OS.

Locate serial number of the computer

             wmic bios get serialnumber

Make and model of the computer

            wmic csproduct get vendor

Finding computer name and model

            wmic csproduct get name

            wmic csproduct get identifying number
