Installing and Configuring Vmware Workstation Pro and Kali Linux 2.0

Installing and Configuring Vmware  Workstation Pro and Kali Linux 2.0

Requirements:

VMware Workstation Pro - VMware Workstation Pro is the industry standard for running multiple operating systems as virtual machines on a single PC.

Kali Linux – Kali Linux is an Advanced Penetration Testing Linux distribution used for Penetration Testing, Ethical Hacking and network security assessments.

Download VMware Workstation Pro Trial and install the Vmware Workstation Pro Trial
Download Kali Linux from its official site.

Once both the things have been done open the Vmware Workstation Pro Trial

Click on ‘Create a New Virtal Machine’  a window appears asking you to choose between Typical installation and Custom installation. Click on Custom Installation.
Note : A custom installation allows you the ample flexibility during your installation.

New Virual Machine Wizard appears asking you how you will install the Operating System (OS) – Click on ‘Installer disk image file (iso)’ and browse to the location where you have kept your downloaded Kali Linux image and click on next.

Choose a guest Operating System if you are installing Kali Linux it is definitely ‘Linux’ and on Version choose the ‘Debian 8.x 64bit’ and click next

Give a virtual machine, for instance ‘Kali2017’, the default name also works fine.
If prompted for Processor Configuration you can choose 1 for Number of processors and 1 for Number of cores per processor and click next.

Memory for the Virtual Machine - This is where you specify how much memory you would like to assign for this Virtual Machine - Slide to 2GB and click next.

Network type - This is an important configuration setting. It totally depends what you want to choose. But I recommend using the Bridge Network as of now.
If you choose 'Use bridge networking' - Virtual Machines with bridged network connections are just like any other physical device on the network
NAT Network Address Translation - Virtual Machine will receive an IP address from VMware Workstation’s built in DHCP server.
Host-Only - Virtual Machine can only communicate with the host that is running VMware Workstation but it has no Internet access.

On SCSI I/O Controller type - Use the Recommended setting
The SCSI is Small Computer System Interface which is a set of standards for connecting and transferring data between computers

For Disk type select the Recommended setting
Click on 'Create a new virtual disk' when asked to choose the disk you want to use.

Disk Capacity - Choose 30 GB and click on 'Store virtual disk as a single file'
Leave everything default when asked 'Where would you like to store the disk file?' and click next.
Lastly click 'Finish'

Now to begin the installation click on 'Power on this virtual machine'
In the next screen choose ‘Graphical Install’
Select the language as ‘English’ and click next
Select you location – India (For me) and click next
Configure the Keyboard- American English’ and click next
Give a name when asked for host name – Example Kali2017 or labs etc.
Leave the domain name blank and click on continue
Specify the password of your choice, if you leave it blank the default username and password is root and toor
Choose 'Guided - use entire disk' when asked to choose the Partitioning Method
Click continue on the next screen
Partitioning Scheme - Select 'All files in one partition (recommended for new users)
Choose  ‘Finish partitioning and write changes to disk’ and click continue
Choose ‘Yes’ when asked whether to write the changes to disks?
Wait for the installation – Patience ‘Said woman take it slow, and it'll work itself out fine, all we need is just a little patience’ a piece from a beautiful song ‘Patience’ by Guns n’ Roses. Check it out on YouTube.
Select 'No' when asked to 'Use a network mirror?'
Click 'Yes' on 'Install the GRUB' boot loader to the master boot record'
Choose /dev/sda for 'Device for boot loader installation' - This is an important part don't mess with it.
Finally an Installation complete message appears. Move the Kali ISO file from current location to another location so that you boot into the new system rather than restarting the installation.
The new Kali Linux will now boot up, wait for it. Enter the username and password. The username by default is root and the password is toor, but if you have specified the password use the same password.
